Jean Shier Obituary

In Loving Memory of Jean Erna Shier (née Hammel)

December 20, 1962 – February 21, 2026

Jean Erna Shier passed peacefully on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at 12:12 p.m. at the Belleville General Hospital, surrounded by the love of her children.Jean was the proud and loving mother to her 3 beautiful children. Her eldest daughter Amanda Jean Kilcup, (Bradford), youngest daughter Kaila Marie Shier, and her baby boy Andrew Clarence Dale Shier, (Alex). She was also a cherished grandmother—“Grama Shier”—to Thomas Shier, Riley Innes, Scarlett Kilcup, and Henry Shier, who all brought her endless amounts of joy.Born in Alice Township. Survived by her siblings; Wayne Hammel, Murray Hammel, Elaine Graham and her mother Betty Hammel.Predeceased by her father, the late Wallace Hammel.Spending her final years in Napanee, Jean lived a life defined by resilience, strength, and deep devotion to her family. Legally blind throughout her life, Jean faced challenges with determination and courage. Though navigation was never easy for her, her inner strength carried her through countless obstacles. She was a feisty woman with a heart full of the best of intentions, shaped by life’s hardships but never defined by them.

After more than 20 years of marriage, Jean chose independence and embraced life on her own terms. Despite lifelong health challenges—including glaucoma, cataracts, multiple open-heart surgeries, and other medical struggles—she remained determined to live life fully.

Jean loved the simple comforts of life: her teddy bears, animals of all kinds, her favorite TLC programs, word searches, and computer games. Above everything else, she loved her children and grandchildren deeply.

Following her diagnosis of stage 4 pancreatic cancer, Jean continued to show incredible strength and courage, making the most of the time she had with those she loved.

In her final days, she was placed on life support, and after four days, it was removed. She passed peacefully within 24 hours, with her children by her side.

She will be remembered for her strength, resilience, independence, and the unconditional love she gave to her family.

Respecting our Mom's wishes, cremation has taken place.
